NHS increases its healthcare activity in 2018

The National Health Service registered an increase in healthcare activity in 2018, as a direct result of the growing demand of its citizens and the investment made in the recruitment of more healthcare professionals.

In primary health care, the total number of medical consultations exceeded 31 million, corresponding to an increase of 1.2 percent when compared with 2017. In the previous years, we find that in 2018 the NHS registered more than 600 thousand consultations in primary health care than in 2015 and 715 thousand more than in 2013. It´s also worth mentioning the positive evolution registered in 2018 in nursing consultations, reaching a rise of 1.5 percent, as well as consultations by other professionals, with a further 20.6 percent.

The tendency of increased healthcare activity was replicated in hospital consultations, with more than 12.1 million hospital consultations in 2018, representing an intensification of the response both in first and subsequent consultations.

As to the surgical activity, 2018 registered a total of 670,455 surgical interventions, in line with the result achieved in 2017, corresponding to an increase of more than 16 thousand surgical interventions compared to 2015 and 25 thousand interventions compared to 2013.

The NHS´s outpatient surgical performance carried on improving reaching 65.5%.,and being identified as a good practice by the OECD.

The number emergency episodes in 2018 reached 6.3 million, in line with the activity of the previous year.
